Merrilands College Bushfire Fundraiser

Koala spurs
funds drive
INSPIRED by the tender story of a traumatised koala rescued from smouldering Humevale bushland, Merrilands P-10 College students embarked on a fundraising mission. In just a few days, the Reservoir school organised a day of events, including a casual clothes day in which students made a gold-coin donation. ‘‘Our students were so touched by the story of Sam the koala,’’ said pathways and transitions lead teacher Samantha Prow. They sold yellow ribbons to commemorate the hundreds of victims killed in the tragedy, and countless wildlife and farm animals that suffered, she said. ‘‘And there was a lolly-guessing competition to raise money for the Kilmore Wildlife Centre, which is caring for injured and homeless animals. ‘‘College captains will visit the wildlife centre to present them with our donation,’’ she said. Firefighters from the MFB Mahoneys
Rd Fire Station accepted the proceeds of the fundraising efforts at a special assembly last Friday, February 13, which they passed on to the Bushfire Appeal. Local cafe La Caprio Cafe hopped on board to help the school raise extra cash, pledging to hand over donations collected from generous customers and staff. Ms Prow said many families had also donated clothing, which would be given to charities.
