Message from the Principal

Merrilands College is a wonderful place for young people to learn, but in 2009 we will be making it an even better place.

Over the past 3 years, we have been developing our PLUS program (Personalised Learning through Understanding Students).  Our PLUS 1 and PLUS 2 programs will mean that each student is measured at least twice per year against Literacy and Victorian Essential Learning Standards.  The results of these measurements will help teachers tailor learning to build the skills and abilities of each child.  Our aim will be for each child to be at or above the relevant level at the key stages of learning.  Each child’s progress will be reported to parents in a detailed discussion between students, parents and teachers at least twice per year.  This provides parents and teachers with the best opportunities to work together to make sure each child achieves their full potential.  Also, our PLUS 3 program will measure the physical development and health of each child.  Special PE and Health programs will then assist our children to maintain and improve health and fitness.  It is widely known that healthy and happy children learn effectively.  Learning at Merrilands is a real PLUS for parents and students.

In 2009, Merrilands College will be organised around the Key Stages of Learning with separate P - 4, 5 - 8 and 9/10 Hubs.  Each of these Hubs will have students lockers and teacher’s offices located near their classrooms.  Specialist classes in Music, Art, Drama, Media, PE and Science all take place in specialist rooms.  While we have an outstanding Resource Centre and private study area, in 2009 we will develop a separate Social Learning Hub where students can study before and after school and during lunchtimes.  Students will be involved in developing this new area.  Student Leadership is a key feature of Merrilands College.  We have Class Captains at each level from Year 6 and our School Captains and Vice Captains are members of School Council.  It is important for students to contribute to the operation of their school.  At Merrilands, students contribute to building our future together.

In 2008 Merrilands teachers, parents and students were involved in a School Review and Self Evaluation.  This provided our School Council and me with feedback on what has worked well so far as well as areas where we could improve.  2009 is shaping up as a bright year for Merrilands College.  For the first time, we are working with Lakeside SC to provide an even better program for our Year 11 and 12 students.  We are also working closely with Ruthven PS on a range of joint P-6 programs.  We have innovative, exciting programs for all students at Merrilands including PATHS, a special program for P-6 students to develop their personal self esteem and good behaviour.  This will start in 2009.  In 2008, all teachers trained in high reliability literacy strategies to use in all classes in 2009.  Also in 2009, our Year 9 & 10 students will once again participate in the Finding My Place program run through Reservoir Library.  We will continue to have debating teams, book clubs, individual and group sports and dance programs, radio production and media, instrumental music and camps and excursions to involve students in real world learning.

Come along to Merrilands College and see our Achievement, Creativity & Excellence.
